Ladders
John of the Ladder is one of the most revered saints in Russia. On Sunday of the fourth week of Great Lent, they bake ladders - special lean cookies. The ladders look like a ladder, boats with cross bars. They are made in memory of the main work of St. John of the Ladder - "The Ladder of Paradise". Once throughout Russia, such ladders were consecrated in churches and given to children. Unleavened rye dough quickly becomes stale, so it is better to eat ladders on the same day.
