Puff pastry and pate pie - FAQ About Ingredients, Baking Time and Storage

Yes, store-bought puff pastry works perfectly for this recipe and saves time. Just ensure it's thawed according to package instructions if frozen.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 160°C (325°F) for 10-15 minutes to retain crispiness.
Absolutely! Replace the chicken liver pate with a mushroom or lentil pate, and omit quail eggs or use tofu scramble for a plant-based version.
Yes! Assemble the pie but don’t bake it. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 1 month. Bake from frozen, adding 10-15 minutes to the cooking time.
Chopped hard-boiled chicken eggs work well. Use 2-3 standard eggs, sliced, to cover the pate layer similarly.
Use gluten-free puff pastry (available in specialty stores) and ensure all other ingredients (like broth in pate) are gluten-free certified.
Ensure the pate filling isn’t too watery—cook it until thickened. Preheating the oven and using a perforated baking pan also helps crisp the crust.
Definitely! Diced cooked bacon, sautéed mushrooms, or herbs like thyme or rosemary pair beautifully with the pate. Keep additions dry to avoid sogginess.
Serve with a light arugula salad, pickled vegetables, or a tangy cucumber-dill yogurt sauce to balance the richness of the pie. Great alongside soup too!
