French fries

Cookinero 3 May 2025

In English-speaking countries, French fries are commonly called "French fries." But this does not mean that the famous crispy slices originated in France. Their homeland is Belgium, where such potatoes are called "frites." Initially, fish was fried this way: it was cut into thin strips and cooked in oil. Later, they tried to do the same with potatoes - and it was a perfect match for the tastes of people from almost all over the world!

French fries - FAQ About Ingredients, Baking Time and Storage

Yes, you can use an air fryer! Toss the dried potatoes with a little oil, then air-fry at 180°C for 15-20 minutes, shaking halfway, until golden brown. The texture will be slightly different but still crispy.
Vegetable oil, peanut oil, or canola oil are great choices due to their high smoke points and neutral flavors. Avoid olive oil for deep-frying, as it burns at high temperatures.
Store cooled fries in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven (200°C) for 5-10 minutes or in an air fryer for 3-5 minutes to restore crispiness.
Try using julienned zucchini or turnips for a low-carb version. Coat lightly in oil and bake or air-fry until crisp. Note that the texture will differ from traditional fries.
The first fry at 150°C cooks the potatoes through, while the second fry at 180°C creates a crispy exterior. Skipping the first fry may result in unevenly cooked or soggy fries.
Yes! After the first fry and cooling, store the par-cooked fries in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Finish with the second fry just before serving for maximum crispiness.
Toss warm fries with garlic powder, paprika, grated Parmesan, truffle oil, or fresh herbs like rosemary. For a kick, add cayenne or chili flakes.
This recipe is naturally gluten-free and vegan as written. Just ensure your oil and salt are vegan-friendly, and avoid cross-contamination for strict gluten-free needs.
