Classic apple pie

Cookinero 20 Jan 2023

In the UK and the US, the recipe for this traditional apple pie has remained unchanged for several centuries. Only small liberties are allowed, for example, vanilla sugar in the dough or a pinch of nutmeg in the filling.

How to cook Classic apple pie

Step 1

Sift flour together with salt in a large bowl, add sugar and vegetable oil. Mix until the dough resembles large bread crumbs. Then, without stopping kneading, pour in water - gradually, 1 tablespoon at a time. The dough should be completely smooth and elastic.

Step 2

Divide the dough into 2 parts (one slightly larger than the other); shape them into cakes, wrap each in cling film and put in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Step 3

Wash the apples, peel and remove the core, cut into thin slices. Sprinkle with lemon juice and stir. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the prepared apples and sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring, 15 minutes.

Step 4

Transfer the apples to a bowl with a slotted spoon. Continue to boil the juice remaining in the saucepan for another 15 minutes, then pour it into a bowl with apples and set aside. When the apples have cooled, add flour and cinnamon, mix.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 180ºС. Cover the bottom of the baking dish with parchment. Put a larger cake in a mold, mold the sides with your hands. Add apple filling.

Step 6

Cover the pie with the remaining dough, fasten the edges. Make a small hole in the center. Brush the top of the pie with butter, sprinkle with sugar. Bake 1 hour. Serve hot with ice cream or whipped cream.
