Ladders

John of the Ladder is one of the most revered saints in Russia. On Sunday of the fourth week of Great Lent, they bake ladders - special lean cookies. Once throughout Russia, such ladders were consecrated in churches and given to children. Unleavened rye dough quickly becomes stale, so it is better to eat ladders on the same day.
