Puff pastry baklava

Ingredients

Puff pastry baklava is one of the most delicious and famous oriental sweets. Homemade puff pastry baklava is prepared with walnuts and honey. A simple baklava recipe does not require much experience in baking desserts. In order to prepare baklava step by step, you will need puff pastry and filling. When selecting nut kernels for the filling, you need to be careful that parts of the shell do not get into the dessert.

Step 1

Prepare the filling for the baklava. Place the peeled nut kernels in a dry frying pan, dry over low heat for 7-10 minutes, stirring. Set aside 15-20 whole nut halves in a separate plate, use them to decorate the baklava at the end of cooking. Grind the dried nuts in a blender to form nut crumbs with large grains. Place the chopped nuts in a bowl, add powdered sugar and cinnamon, and stir.

Prepare the dough. Melt the butter in a water bath or microwave. Line a baking sheet with parchment. Cut a piece of defrosted dough that will fill the baking pan and still form 5 cm high sides. Roll this piece with a rolling pin so that the dough is 2 mm thick. Cut off the same amount of dough and leave it for the last layer. It will cover the entire dessert. Cut it off and put it aside. Cut the remaining dough into smaller layers. Keep in mind that the dough layer should be 1 mm thick and the edges should not curl.

Prepare the dessert. Brush the first layer of dough with melted butter. Put a thin layer of filling. Roll out the next layer of dough and cover the filling. Brush the layer with butter again and spread some of the filling. Make several layers of dough in this way. When you have laid out the last layer of filling, roll out the dough that you have set aside to a larger size to cover the dessert. This layer should be the same as the very first one at the bottom. Carefully fold the edges of the dough and connect them to the bottom edge, flattening the dough with your fingers. Beat the egg with a fork or whisk. Brush the surface of the future dessert. Use a knife to mark diamonds on the raw dough, drawing stripes lengthwise and crosswise. Do not cut deeply, just outline the shape. Place half a nut in each of the diamonds. Bake the baklava in the oven for 40 minutes.

Step 4

Soak the baklava in syrup. Remove the dessert from the oven, cut the baklava into diamonds with a knife. Let it cool. Mix honey, sugar and hot water in a saucepan. Put it on the fire, stir, let it boil, cook for 7-10 minutes. Boil the syrup, stirring constantly, until a thin caramel thread appears. Pour the hot syrup over the surface of the baklava. Pay special attention to the cuts. Leave the delicacy to soak for 2-8 hours.
